How to find a reliable handyman or contractor

I posted this because, I want folks out there to protect themselves from being
burned by some of the knuckleheads out there. WorkPros Handyman gets a lot of calls
from folks that have paid for work and not received what they pay for along with a
lot of shoddy workmanship. Folks, I want to stress this before I post the tips. The lowest price out there is not always the best deal!!! Sometimes that low price handyman
or contractor can end up costing you more. Some examples 1) someone gets hurt and the handyman isn't carrying Workers' Comp., then your on the hook. 2) The contractor or handyman does bad work and you end up having to pay twice to get the job done right.
these are just couple examples. Well here's the list.

1. Prices that seem too good to be true usually are too good. Some "great deals" will involve low-quality work or substandard materials. Some low bidders plan to make up profits on inevitable change orders.
2. Do not buy from an unknown company selling door to door.
3. Resist the high-pressure sales technique. "Act now" offers are rarely that limited in a remodel project.
4. Avoid moonlighters - their work may not be quality. In some cases, the goods and materials they are using may be stolen from their employer or another source. They also may not be properly licensed or have proper insurance.
5. A sign in your neighbor's yard during a project does not mean that your neighbor will be happy with the result and recommends the handyman.
6. A referral may not be worth much if the person judging does not have a good ability to critique. Even bad repair companies can have a good job. A good company can have a bad job on a bad day.
7. Check references and other sources. The BBB is a start but it is only a start. Check the Secretary of State to see if the handyman/contractor is incorporated. Find the county of their registered agent and prinicpal office. Check the legal records for the courts in those counties (both the individual and the corporation) - many court files are now online. Check the state license (if one is required). Check counties where the contractor works to see if owners have sued or been sued.
8. Avoid price comparisons that are "apples to oranges."
9. A good handyman will have a good contract. Contracts are the legal documents that give you you the clear rights.and remedies. A good contract details the specifications of the project. Handshake deals are basically costly battles waiting to be fought.
10. Avoid large up-front payments. But some additional deposits are reasonable if required by a contractor when items are special ordered or non-refundable. If possible, use credit card to make payments so that you may avail yourself of additional legal protection.

Bath safety grab bars are a good idea!

Bathroom falls are a leading cause of home death and injury, if you have parents that are getting older and starting to have a hard time getting around or if you yourself could use a something steady in the bath area a safety grab bar might be just the answer. Consider getting a couple of grabbars in the bath or shower area as well as near the commode. Safety grab bars are not only for the bathroom though. A safety grabbar can be helpful in the bedroom as something to lean on when getting dressed or near the most used entrance in your home where the floor may be wet from snow or rain. While we are on the subject of home safety consider having a handyman
check your stairway railings to make sure they are strong and in good shape, so their ready when you need them.

Dryer Vent -- Handyman Tip

Consider cleaning or have your dryer vent cleaned every couple of years. A clogged dryer vent can clog and affect the operation of your dryer and is also a fire hazard. It is also a good idea to clean behind your dryer.

Workpros handy man would like to introduce you to another group of products we carry from the Onyx Collection. Let me just add this if you are looking for Premium Quality this is it. The Onyx Collection consists of awesome quality shower bases, lavatory sink tops, shower and bath wall systems. The shower and tub surround systems are nothing like you will see from Bathfitter or Rebath those are way more inferior, they feel like plastic, although I believe that most of there systems are acrylic. Our Onyx Collection systems are more
of a solid surface like Corian and way more thicker. These systems are great for converting bathtubs to a walk in shower, you can actually get a better product than those "other guys" and pay less, in most circumstances. Here is a color list. Stay tuned more to come
